Amherst Nurseries has been using grow bags since 2002.
- Initially looking for a way to reduce soil loss without growing in a container based system due to poor root quality and expense of establishing the system
- Grow bags fit both criteria, as less soil was needed to grow a tree vs. B&B, and root circling was eliminated
- As we gained experience and confidence in the bags, we switched to leaf based compost in 2010, completely eliminating soil loss, decreasing product weight, and reducing fertilizer needs.
- Compost is created on-site from our landscape division fall leaf collection.
